Cat Murcek will lead this fun, shorter workshop exploring the deeper stretch, length and groundedness that we can achieve with the prop known as the Iyengar chair.

Learn how the Iyengar chair can provide leverage for twists and spirals. The chair can also form a frame on which we can practice hip hinging at a different angle. Athletes such as climbers and pitchers will appreciate the chance to organize and connect the upper body, in tandem with the chair. Grab the chair and stretch off it! Muscle, fascia, and other connective tissues can lengthen more effectively, using the support of the chair. Inversion poses become more accessible, comfortable and sustainable.

Follow up this workshop with weekly small group classes at New Leaf with either Cat Murcek or Laura Staton, New Leaf teachers who both regularly use the Iyengar chair in their classes!

About Cat Murcek

Catherine “Cat” Murcek is a Brooklyn-based dance artist and yoga instructor at the 500-hr level, having trained first at Yogaworks with Natasha Rizopoulos and then with Alison West and Deborah Wolk at Yoga Union. Cat first connected with yoga in Boston after receiving a B.A. in Intl. Economics from Franklin College of Switzerland. What began as a mode to supplement her dance training quickly became a vital tool for maintaining her tranquility and groundedness. Cat has completed additional training in Yoga for Backcare and Scoliosis, and in Alexander technique. These trainings, combined with her somatic experience from dance, have infused Cat’s teaching with an appreciation for alignment within flow and for the therapeutic potential of yoga. Cat has also assisted Dr. Loren Fishman in providing yoga therapy. Cat leads yoga retreats in the US and internationally – ask her about her next retreat!

Previous experience is not required. We have clean, cushy mats for you.
